Bibliomancy - Book Divination.

According to the ever trusty Dictionary.com, Bibliomancy is the act of divination by book. A relatively simple method, Bibliomancers (fancy!) turn to a page and interpret the word/line/passage. There are different ways of randomising the selection, especially when the volume used is worn and tends to fall open at particular pages, such as rolling dice to determine page numbers. The traditional book of choice has been The Bible or classics such as Virgil or Homer, but really any book can be used from Shakespeare to Douglas Adams.

As a booklover, budding Librarianship student, lapsed Pagan and admittedly shamefully crappy diviner, Bibliomancy has tickled my interest. What book would you choose to represent yourself? A book to answer your questions about yourself and help you understand your life. Would it be your favourite childhood book; treasured and re-read at different stages of your life? Or your current favourite read that reflects your present mindset? Your holy text; a dictionary; a tattered teenaged diary?

I’m having trouble deciding from my shelves. My tattered favourite is Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (or maybe Northanger Abbey…), but I have copies of Shakespeare’s Sonnets and a Complete Emily Dickenson waiting to be read that could give interesting results. So many possibilities! Which book would you choose for you?
